As a part of the Mother’s Day celebrations at the Dyldam Parramatta Eels, several players welcomed their mums to watch a training session this week and surprised them with lunch, flowers and presents. See photos from the visit.
We caught up with the Blue and Gold mothers to chat about what their sons were like growing up, on and off the field, and how they celebrate Mothers day.
If there is one thing Eels forward David Gower can’t do, according to his mum Henny Gower, it’s cooking. Henny had no hesitation in telling us this story about David when he was in England.
“When I went to England and Dave had a shoulder reconstruction, I flew over and visited him. it was funny watching him try to cook, it wasn’t a good look,” Henny said.
“The boys over there had to teach him how to cook as well as wash because he knew absolutely nothing before he left so it was really funny to watch” she laughed.
One thing that David does know how to do is play rugby league and Henny insisted that her son gives everything he has into every game he plays.
“He was always very, very competitive even from the under 9’s when he started, he was always out their to win, he was always out there to put in 100% and he just loved it,” Henny recalled of watching David as a young footballer.
“It’s so hard to describe, when you realise how much he worked hard for it over the years and how hard it is really to get to this level,” Henny said.
“It’s just such an absolute pleasure to see him at this level now and it just makes you so proud that he did it for himself because he ultimately did it because he loves it.”
A proud mother, Henny can remember the constant trips dropping David and his brother Sean to training throughout his junior career.
“Over the years, I averaged out about 2 nights a week in the junior years, at one stage they were actually playing soccer and rugby league” Henny said of her sons involvement in sports at a young age.
“I’d be training every night of the week with one of them and I took a pillow on the car and I’d just sleep while they trained. I think I managed one year and it was just to hard.”
